A Classic American Highball with a Twist

THE HIGHBALL

Fall Cocktail | Cider Jack Cocktail

After World War I and before World War II, was the Prohibition Era, during the years of 1920-1933. Bartenders had limited access to good booze, so they used sweeteners and juices to cover up the taste of the roughness of the alcohol. This required alot of creativity but some great cocktails came from this era. One of the more famous cocktails was the “Highball.”

A simple brown spirit-and-ginger ale Highball was a common order. Back in the days of road tripping the American Highways and Motor Inn’s, before the Mini-Bar,  travelers carried these antique liquor attaches along. Pretty sweet. I remember my grandfather had one similar to this in his trunk. Always ready for a highball!

Today’s rendition – mix your favorite bourbon with one of the craft ginger beers on the market now, like Fever Tree, and adding a twist of lime for a pleasantly spiced refreshment. For a seasonal cocktail, which is perfect around Thanksgiving, try this recipe.
