Taking it higher at Sundance Sundance Film Fesitval | December 13, 2012 | By: Nichole Wright Los Angeles Examiner | Arts & Entertainment The Sundance Film Festival took in almost 50,000 attendees last year and is now one of the largest independent film festivals in the US. With an inaugural launch in 1978, the festival was intended to showcase strictly American-made films, highlight the potential of independent film and to increase visibility for film making in Utah. However, all of this has changed throughout the years. Robert Redford first created and chaired the event, which helped propel the growth dramatically. Sundance has transcended from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators from outside the Hollywood system to a media extravaganza for Hollywood celebrity actors, paparazzi, and luxury lounges set up by companies not affiliated with Sundance.
